Short stories in Italian for beginners — with translation

Italian is a pleasure to read early: words are spelled as they sound, and much of the vocabulary is recognisable to English speakers. What slows beginners down is mostly verbs — many endings, several past tenses — and the little pronouns that attach to them. Easy stories let you meet these in context long before you study them formally.

ReadNative's Italian book is Collodi's The Adventures of Pinocchio, retold as one graded story in 44 chapters, from the talking piece of wood at A1 up to B1. The opening chapters of The Adventures of Pinocchio — in fact the whole book — are free to read in your browser at readnative.org, with tap-to-translate on every word.

How to read these stories

Questions

What is a good first book in Italian?

A graded version of a story with a strong plot. Pinocchio is a natural choice: short episodes, a clear moral arc and a vocabulary of everyday things.

Is the Italian simplified or the original?

Simplified and retold. The original Collodi is 19th-century prose; the graded version keeps the story but controls vocabulary and grammar level by level.

Can I read on my phone?

Yes — ReadNative runs on Android, iOS and in the web browser, and books can be read offline in the apps.
