Short stories in Brazilian Portuguese for beginners
Brazilian Portuguese has a smaller pool of easy reading than Spanish, and much of what exists is European Portuguese. Beginners also have to get used to the nasal vowels and the many spellings with accents and tildes (ã, õ, ç). A graded story in Brazilian Portuguese gives you the forms you will actually hear, in a context you can follow.
ReadNative's Portuguese book is The Alienist, Machado de Assis's satirical tale of a doctor who decides half the town is mad, retold in 36 chapters from A1 up to B1. The opening chapters of The Alienist — in fact the whole book — are free to read in your browser at readnative.org, with tap-to-translate on every word.

How to read these stories
- Tap the contractions — "no", "na", "do", "pelo" — until you recognise them; they are prepositions fused with articles.
- If you know Spanish, read for similarities but tap anything that looks too familiar: false friends are common.
- Do not let accents slow you down. Treat them as part of the word shape and keep reading.
- Re-read a chapter you found hard a week later; it will feel noticeably easier.
Questions
Are the stories in Brazilian or European Portuguese?
Brazilian Portuguese. The Alienist is by Machado de Assis, one of Brazil's great writers, and the retelling uses Brazilian usage.
Is it hard to find easy reading in Portuguese?
Harder than for Spanish or French. There are some graded series, but fewer, and many target European Portuguese. That is one reason a full graded story is useful.
Do I need to pay?
No. The first book in every language on ReadNative is free, and The Alienist is the Portuguese one.
