O Alienista

The Alienist — after Machado de Assis

Machado de Assis' sly masterpiece about Dr. Simão Bacamarte, the man of science whose asylum slowly swallows his whole town — retold as one graded story that opens in the simplest Brazilian Portuguese and climbs, chapter by chapter, to B1. By the end, only one perfectly sane man in Itaguaí is left to lock up.
