Easy Greek short stories for beginners
Greek has less graded reading available than the big Western European languages, and the alphabet stops many learners before they reach a single story. Once the letters click, though, Greek is satisfying to read: you will spot roots behind hundreds of English words, and the stress accent is marked in writing.
ReadNative's Greek book is Aesop's Fables, retold in Modern Greek as one continuous story — the life of Aesop, with the famous fables woven in — over 42 chapters from absolute beginner to B1. Tap any word for its meaning and a Latin transliteration. The opening chapters of Aesop's Fables — in fact the whole book — are free to read in your browser at readnative.org, with tap-to-translate on every word.

How to read these stories
- Learn the alphabet and the common letter pairs (ου, αι, ει, μπ, ντ) before you start.
- Use the accent mark — it tells you which syllable to stress, which helps you remember words.
- Look out for English words with Greek roots; they make many new words easy to guess.
- Each fable is short, so finishing one per session keeps a steady rhythm.
Questions
Is this Modern or Ancient Greek?
Modern Greek. The fables are ancient, but the retelling is in the language spoken in Greece today.
Is the Greek alphabet hard?
Usually a few days' work, especially as several letters are familiar from maths and science.
Are there other Greek graded readers?
Some, but far fewer than for Spanish or French. That is why a long graded story is useful.
