Georgian graded readers, level by level
For most of its history, Georgian has had almost no graded readers. Learners went from a textbook straight to native prose โ and Georgian verbs, with their preverbs, version vowels and shifting subject cases, make that jump brutal. ReadNative set out to build a real ladder, and Georgian is now its deepest language: thirteen books from A1 to B2, most of them retellings of classics Georgians themselves grew up with.
Every book is in the Georgian script with tap-to-translate: tap a word for its English meaning and Latin transliteration, or a sentence for a full translation. Khevisberi Gocha (A1) and Georgian 200 (A2โB1) are free, and you can read the first chapters free in your browser, tapping any word for its English meaning or any sentence for a translation. Me, Grandma, Iliko and Ilarion also has read-along audio.

A1
Start with Khevisberi Gocha, Alexander Kazbegi's mountain story retold in 50 very short chapters, and 25 Easy Georgian Stories (A1โA2). Short, repetitive sentences let you absorb the basic case endings and the most common verb forms before you study them. Me, Grandma, Iliko and Ilarion, after Nodar Dumbadze, also starts here and climbs all the way to C1, with audio.
A2
Read Is He a Human?!, Ilia Chavchavadze's satire of a lazy noble couple in Kakheti. At this stage you want everyday vocabulary and past tenses in context. If you are preparing for the citizenship or state-language exam, add Georgian 200, which drills the exam's sentence types โ cases, tenses, question words, conjunctions โ chapter by chapter.
B1
Move to longer narratives: The Surami Fortress (after Daniel Chonkadze), The Jeans Generation (after Dato Turashvili), and then The Blue Mountains (after Rezo Cheishvili) and Kvachi Kvachantiradze (after Mikheil Javakhishvili), which both reach B2. These bring more dialogue, more verb series and more idiomatic Georgian. Georgian History & Legends adds cultural background.
B2
Jaqo's Dispossessed (Javakhishvili) and Journey to Karabakh (after Aka Morchiladze) bring adult themes and fuller prose. The Knight in the Panther's Skin, retold from Rustaveli's epic, is the capstone: the poem every Georgian knows, in prose you can follow. After this, native novels become realistic.

Questions
Are there Georgian graded readers outside ReadNative?
Very few. There are textbooks with reading passages and some adapted texts from Georgian universities, but a continuous ladder of graded books from A1 to B2 is rare, which is why ReadNative built one.
Which Georgian book should I start with?
Khevisberi Gocha if you have just learned the alphabet. It is A1 throughout and free.
Can graded readers help with the Georgian citizenship exam?
Reading builds the vocabulary and grammar the exam tests, and Georgian 200 is designed around the exam's sentence types. It is practice material, not an official exam resource.
