Chinese graded readers by HSK level

Chinese is the best-served Asian language for graded reading. Mandarin Companion and Chinese Breeze publish level-controlled books, Du Chinese and The Chairman's Bao offer graded articles and stories, and many learners use Pleco alongside. What matters most is character load: a book is the right level when you recognise nearly all the characters on a page.

ReadNative's Chinese shelf has six graded books that form a ladder from HSK 1 to HSK 5, all with read-along audio and pinyin on tap. Journey to the West (HSK 1–3) is free, and you can read the first chapters free in your browser, tapping any word for its English meaning or any sentence for a translation.

What to read at each level

HSK 1–2

Journey to the West starts here, with the Stone Monkey's birth in very short sentences, and The Twelve Zodiac Animals (HSK 1–2) retells the Jade Emperor's race. At this stage you need heavy repetition of a few hundred words, and audio to tie characters to tones.

HSK 3

Finish Journey to the West, then read Stories of Afanti, the witty Uyghur folk hero, and The Legend of the White Snake (both HSK 2–3). Sentences grow longer and use 了, 过 and complements more often.

HSK 4

Romance of the Three Kingdoms (selections, HSK 3–4) brings in more formal vocabulary and longer narrative — the oath in the Peach Garden, Dong Zhuo, Lü Bu. This is where many learners first feel they are reading "real" Chinese.

HSK 5

Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (HSK 4–5), Pu Songling's ghost and fox stories, bridges to native material. After it, try web novels, children's literature and graded news.

Questions

Do ReadNative's Chinese books have audio?

Yes, all six have read-along narration.

Are the levels based on HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0?

The labels follow the familiar HSK 1–6 scale. HSK 3.0, introduced in 2021, uses nine bands with larger vocabulary lists, so treat any HSK label as a rough guide.

How does ReadNative compare to Du Chinese?

Du Chinese offers many short graded lessons; ReadNative focuses on long graded stories with vocabulary tracking and spaced-repetition review. Many learners use more than one tool.
