🇨🇳 HSK 3
HSK 3 reading practice: Chinese stories at your level
HSK 3 is a turning point. At around 600 words, you can read longer sentences with result complements, 把 constructions and connected clauses — but most native texts still have too many unknown characters to enjoy. This is where graded readers do their most important work.
ReadNative has four books that cover HSK 3: the final chapters of Journey to the West, Stories of Afanti (the witty Uyghur folk hero), The Legend of the White Snake, and the opening of Romance of the Three Kingdoms (HSK 3–4). Journey to the West is free: you can read its first chapters — in fact all 50 — in your browser, tapping any word for pinyin and an English meaning, or any sentence for a translation. All of ReadNative's Chinese books have read-along audio.
HSK 3 reaches about 600 words under the HSK 2.0 standard, adding complements of result and degree, the 把 construction, more conjunctions, and vocabulary for feelings, health and travel.

Questions
Is HSK 3 enough to read real Chinese?
Not quite native material yet, but plenty of graded stories. HSK 3 is the level where reading becomes enjoyable rather than effortful, if the text is graded.
Which book should I start with?
If you have not read it yet, Journey to the West, which is free. Then Stories of Afanti, whose short, funny episodes are easy to read in one sitting.
Does this follow HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0?
The word counts here follow the HSK 2.0 standard (HSK 1–6), which most textbooks and graded readers still use. HSK 3.0, introduced in 2021, has nine bands and larger word lists, so treat levels as approximate.
