HSK 5 reading practice: Chinese stories at your level

At HSK 5 you know about 2,500 words and can read a lot โ€” but native novels still bring a steady stream of unknown words, chengyu and written-style grammar. Graded material at this level is scarcer, and its job is to bridge the gap to native reading.

ReadNative's Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (HSK 4โ€“5) retells Pu Songling's ghost and fox stories โ€” the Daoist of Laoshan, planting pears โ€” in Chinese that reaches HSK 5. After it, you can import your own Chinese EPUBs and read them with tap-to-translate support. All of ReadNative's Chinese books have read-along audio.

HSK 5 covers about 2,500 words under the HSK 2.0 standard, including much written-style vocabulary, chengyu and the language of newspapers and essays.

Questions

Are there graded readers at HSK 5?

Fewer than at lower levels. Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio is ReadNative's HSK 4โ€“5 book; beyond that, native material is the next step.

Can I read my own Chinese books in ReadNative?

Yes. You can import EPUBs, which are translated chapter by chapter, and read them with tap-to-translate and vocabulary tracking.

Does this follow HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0?

The word counts here follow the HSK 2.0 standard (HSK 1โ€“6), which most textbooks and graded readers still use. HSK 3.0, introduced in 2021, has nine bands and larger word lists, so treat levels as approximate.
