Easy Armenian short stories for beginners
There is very little graded reading for Armenian learners. Most material is either a textbook or native literature far beyond a beginner, and the unique Armenian alphabet adds another layer before you can read anything at all. If you have looked for easy Armenian stories and found almost nothing, you are not imagining it.
ReadNative's Armenian book is David of Sassoun, the national epic in Hovhannes Tumanyan's version, retold over 40 chapters from absolute beginner up to B1. Tap any word for its English meaning and a Latin transliteration. The opening chapters of David of Sassoun — in fact the whole book — are free to read in your browser at readnative.org, with tap-to-translate on every word.

How to read these stories
- Learn the 38 letters first; Armenian spelling is close to phonetic, so reading aloud soon becomes easy.
- Use the transliteration on tap while letters like ղ, ռ and ք still slow you down.
- Notice the definite article -ը/-ն at the end of nouns; it appears in almost every sentence.
- Treat the epic as a series of short episodes — one chapter per sitting is plenty.
Questions
Is this Eastern or Western Armenian?
Eastern Armenian, the standard language of Armenia.
Are there other Armenian graded readers?
Very few. That scarcity is why ReadNative wrote a full graded retelling of David of Sassoun rather than a handful of short texts.
Is it free?
Yes. The first book in every language on ReadNative is free, and David of Sassoun is the Armenian one.
