How to say “I love you” in Japanese

好きだよ

suki da yo

Literally: (I) like (you)informal

Japanese couples rarely say 愛してる ("I love you"), which sounds dramatic, like a film or a proposal. 好き ("like") or 大好き ("really like") is how feelings are usually expressed, and confessing your feelings is called 告白 (kokuhaku).
