How to say “Hello” in Japanese

こんにちは

konnichiwa

Literally: as for todayneutral

Used from late morning to late afternoon; the final は is a particle and is pronounced "wa", not "ha". It is a fixed greeting, a shortened form of an old phrase that began "Today is…". Among close friends people often just say やあ or nothing at all.
