How to say “Good morning” in Brazilian Portuguese

Bom dia

bohn JEE-ah

Literally: good dayneutral

Used until about noon, then switch to "boa tarde". In most of Brazil the "d" before "i" sounds like "j" (in Portugal and parts of the Northeast it stays "DEE-ah"). It is polite to say it to bus drivers, doormen and shopkeepers.

In a sentence

Bom dia! Dormiu bem?

bohn JEE-ah! dor-MEE-oo bayn?

Good morning! Did you sleep well?
