Best apps to learn Thai by reading (2026)

3 apps whose own sites list Thai, and what each is good for.

We make ReadNative, so it’s listed first and labelled. Statements about other apps come from their own websites, checked 21 October 2026 (sources); ratings, user numbers and prices are left out. Readlang is included because it says it covers 100+ languages without listing them.

What matters in a Thai reading app

Thai has 44 consonants, vowels written around them, five tones and no spaces between words. That makes word segmentation and a romanization with tone marks the two features that matter most in a reading tool.

Questions

What is the best app to learn Thai by reading?

It depends on your level and what you want to read. For a complete beginner who wants a story written for their level, ReadNative’s Sang Thong, the Golden Prince starts at A1 and is free. To import and read your own Thai content with audio, LingQ supports Thai. If audio on everything matters most, look at LingQ.

Is there a free app to read Thai?

Yes: Sang Thong, the Golden Prince is free in ReadNative and readable here in your browser (38 chapters online); LingQ, Clozemaster also start free.

Can I learn to read Thai without learning the tone rules?

You can recognise words without them, but the tone of a written syllable comes from consonant class, vowel length and tone marks. Learn the rules early; romanization helps while they settle in.
