What matters in a Russian reading app

Cyrillic takes days, not months, to learn, but Russian stress is unmarked in normal text and words change ending with six cases. Glosses that show the dictionary form and a transliteration help early on, and graded text keeps the case endings from piling up.

Questions

What is the best app to learn Russian by reading?

It depends on your level and what you want to read. For a complete beginner who wants a story written for their level, ReadNative’s The Captain's Daughter starts at A1 and is free. To import and read your own Russian content with audio, LingQ supports Russian. If audio on everything matters most, look at LingQ, Beelinguapp.

Is there a free app to read Russian?

Yes: The Captain's Daughter is free in ReadNative and readable here in your browser (46 chapters online); LingQ, Beelinguapp, Readlang, Clozemaster also start free.

Do I need stress marks to read Russian?

They help beginners, but normal Russian text never shows them. Learn stress word by word as you go, and expect to read unmarked text from the intermediate stage on.
